An official of Biden’s transition team expressed his position on the Taiwan Province issue and the Foreign Ministry of China responded.
CCTV News:On January 11, 2021, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian held a regular press conference.
Phoenix TV reporter: We are concerned that U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo said that the restrictions on exchanges between the United States and Taiwan will be lifted. An official of Biden’s transition team also said that once Biden takes office, he will continue to support the peaceful settlement of cross-strait issues in a way that conforms to the wishes and best interests of the people of Taiwan Province. What is China’s comment on this?
Zhao Lijian: China firmly opposes and strongly condemns the above actions of the US.
There is only one China in the world, Taiwan Province is an inalienable part of the territory of China, and the government of People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is a basic fact recognized by the international community and a basic norm of international relations.
The US government has made a serious commitment to China on the Taiwan Province issue. The Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and the United States published on December 16th, 1978 clearly pointed out that the United States recognizes the People’s Republic of China (PRC) government as the sole legal government of China, and within this scope, the American people will maintain cultural, commercial and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan Province. The United States should keep its word and not misinterpret or deviate from it under any pretext.
The so-called "Taiwan Relations Act" of the United States is a serious violation of the One-China principle and Three Joint Communiqués regulations, and China has resolutely opposed it from the beginning. On the Taiwan Province issue, the United States should abide by the one-China principle and the Three Joint Communiqués regulations, not the "Taiwan Relations Act" unilaterally enacted by the United States.
The people of China are determined to defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will never allow anyone or any force to block the process of China’s reunification and use the Taiwan Province issue to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Any act that harms China’s core interests will be resolutely countered by China, and it is impossible to succeed.
The Taiwan Province issue has always been the most important and sensitive core issue in Sino-US relations. The one-China principle is the political basis of Sino-US relations and the prerequisite for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between the two sides. We urge the US to abide by the one-China principle and Three Joint Communiqués regulations, and stop any words and deeds to enhance US-Taiwan relations and strengthen military ties with Taiwan. We advise people like Pompeo to recognize the historical trend, stop manipulating Taiwan-related issues, stop doing wrong, and don’t go further and further on the wrong and dangerous road, otherwise they will be severely punished by history.
Regarding the statement made by Biden’s transition team, we urge the US to abide by the one-China principle and Three Joint Communiqués regulations, stop any form of official exchanges between the US and Taiwan, stop military ties between the US and Taiwan, and handle Taiwan-related issues carefully and properly.
